Top Ten Movie Mutants

In Pandorum Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster face off in space against terrifying space mutants in a fight for the survival of the human race! To celebrate the release of the DVD and Blu-ray on February 15th, here’s a run down on the top ten best movie mutants you wouldn’t want to spend Valentine’s Day with!

 

Pandorum (2009)

In Pandorum Lt. Payton (Dennis Quaid) and Corporal Bower (Ben Foster) wake up in space with no idea who they are or how they came to be aboard the spaceship. As they explore they discover they are not alone, and that there are humanoid mutants roaming the ship. When they meet fellow survivor Leyland (Eddie Rouse) he informs them that a former member of the crew freed all other crew members in hypersleep, and as they waited to reach their destination they have mutated into monsters!

 

The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

This cult classic was re-made in 2006 and based on the original film by Wes Craven. In the film, a family become stranded in the desert after their car breaks down. Unknown to them, the area they are trapped in was once a secret military base used for government testing, and the residents of the area have mutated due to the nuclear tests. Panic ensues as the family make gruesome discoveries in the hills and one by one fall victim to the mutants’ psychotic ways....

 

28 Days Later (2002)

Re-inventing the British horror genre, Danny Boyle’s classic horror/post apocalyptic film tells the story of Jim (Cillian Murphy), a hospitalized bicycle courier who awakes to find whilst unconscious Britain’s population has been destroyed by a highly contagious virus.  Meeting up with other survivors Selena (Naomie Harris) and father and daughter Hannah (Megan Burns) and Frank (Brendan Gleeson), the film concentrates on their battle for survival in a world ruled by rage infested mutant humans, whilst trying to make contact with a group of soldiers stationed near Manchester.

 

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

The four crime fighting turtles with a love of Pizza first appeared in comics in the early 1980’s, and became so successful they have spawned four feature films to date. The original live action film from 1990 showed the origins of the turtles, their training under fellow mutant animal and sensei, Splinter and their battles against their arch enemy Shredder. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide, and at the time of its release was the highest grossing independent film of all time.

 

 

X-2 (2003)

The second filmin the X-men trilogy based on the Marvel comics about a crime fighting group of mutants. Leading on from the first film and based on the story of Wolverine’s (Hugh Jackman) hazy past, the film saw the X-men and outcast mutant Magneto (Ian McKellen) fighting alongside each other to defeat the evil Colonel William Striker (Brian Cox) who tries to destroy every mutant on Earth.

 

Spiderman 2 (2004)

Based on the comic about the ordinary boy given super powers when bitten by a radioactive spider, Spiderman 2 followed Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as he battled to combine his normal life as a student with his life as a superhero. But when witnessing crime and injustice around him, he couldn’t help but don his spidey outfit once more for the good of the New York citizens.

 

The Descent (2005)

Another British horror, The Descent tells the tale of a group of women who go on a caving expedition. As they explore the caves the passage collapses, trapping them inside. When they find a cave painting they start to believe there is another way out and begin to search for it. But hidden in the depths there isn’t an exit, instead the cave is filled with terrifying humanoid mutants called crawlers, who begin to pick off the group one by one....

 

 

Blade (1998)

Starring Wesley Snipes, Blade is loosely based on the Marvel character of the same name. Blade is a half vampire half human vampire hunter, whose mother was bitten by a vampire during pregnancy. His hatred for the creatures who killed his mother lead him to a life of hunting and destroying them, and leads him to battle Deacon Frost, a vampire who longs to capture Blade to utilize his blood for its ability to withstand typical vampire weaknesses.

 

 

The Fly (1986)

Critically acclaimed sci fi horror The Fly starred Jeff Goldblum as an aspiring scientist Seth Brundle who has built a teleporting device. Whilst testing the device for the first time with humans with himself as the subject, a housefly manages to get into the machine. Although he initially feels fine, as time passes Seth begins to mutate into a half human half fly creature. The film was a box office success, with Jeff Goldblum’s makeup proving so lifelike it won an Oscar in 1986.

 

I Am Legend (2007)

Similarly to 28 Days Later but based on the book from the 1950’s of the same name, I Am Legend is set in New York, where Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only survivor after a supposed cure for cancer turns into a vicious mutating virus. Living in fear of being hunted by the mutant human population that hides in the shadows scientists Neville tries to find a cure for the disease that has killed everyone he’s ever known.

 

Pandorum is released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 15th 2010.
