As Cassam suggested, the process involves selecting films that stand up to repeat viewings: I'd go further than this, however. It involves selecting films that go beyond the normal pandering to audience trends and cashing in on the themes of the moment, and choosing those timeless classic who address issues of timeless importance. Of course, this means that the choice remains very personal - we all have opinion's on what is important after all - but I'd like to think that these are films which hooked us all in their own way, and will continue to do so for many more decades. Again, these are in no particular order and will be defended in a podcast soon... Pan's Labyrinth
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Waltz With Bashir
Dogville
Spirited Away
Apocalypto
Memento
Juno
Oldboy
No Country for Old Men

In response to my co-editor Cassam's Top 10 of the Decade, (which succeeded in getting my arms thrown in the air), I have compiled my own list of films from 2000-2009 that I believe will withstand the test of time. They are what I consider to be the most exciting, innovative and interesting films of the period, with no regard to hype, critical acclaim or awards.
