Every so often (it was going to be weekly but... well... we got lazy) we take sample readings from the divine texts of the Cinema Gods in order to examine their wisdom, so that we might profit from their wise words. Amen. This week, in celebration of the impending release of Antichrist, we are reading from the gospel according to Lars von Trier. Our first reading is from Idiotus Chapter XVI verse II: And so didst Karen approach the group, and was beguiled by their childish simplicity. She was drawn to the group of the lame for her own life was lame. Come early the following morning, did the cock crow thrice and then Karen didst know that she had been deceived and she grew pale 'Your falsehood concerns me so, for the Lord demand that we mocketh not those less fortunate than ourselves.' But it mattered not to the flippant Stoffer and his band of class warriors, for they believed themselves to be righteous. In his infinite wisdom, Lord Lars beheld the scene before him and he did smile; for he saw through the futility of all human existence, and in his infinite wisdom knew he that he was very wise and that his wisdom should be proclaimed to one and all. And so Lord Lars smote the group, he tore them asunder so that we might learn from their frailties, he tore them asunder as it amused him so. Thanks be to Lars. Our second reading comes from the Dancer Nocturnius, chapter X verse I: Let us know heareth from the tale of Selma Jezkova who, though she was poor of earthly possessions and poor in sight, was rich in spirit. And though she looked like Bjork, the Icelandic she-devil of yore, was she gentler in spirit and fantastical only in her mind. She toiled day and night to provide for her beloved son for, as Lars doth teach us, we must always see that thy glory is reflected only in thine capacity for love with thy fellow man. Alas one day didst a snake enter her life, and steal from her her only means of support, and forthwith didst he seek to damage Selma further by bearing false witness against her. Embattled, but not defeated, Selma held forth, and continued her good fight for the well-being of her son, retreating into an inner world of personal joy as she did so. But still it was not enough. And so Lord Lars smote Selma, he tore her asunder so that we might learn from her frailties, he tore her asunder as it amused him so. Thanks be to Lars The scenes are taken from Idioterne (1998) and Dancer in the Dark (2000). You can also read our Antichrist review here!
